Secure Erase is a standard firmware-based technology developed by hard drive manufacturers that is built into most current drives.
Activation of the command by the intimus hammer completely resets the hard disk to its original state and deletes all data. During implementation, the drive is assigned a random password that encodes it. The drive will not be decoded until the Secure Erase process is complete. Secure Erase is faster, more secure and much more energy efficient than any software-based overwrite solution.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has already defined new guidelines for the deletion of electronic data media, which assign the Secure Erase procedure - in addition to demagnetization - to the highest security level. This level does not include physical destruction methods.
